How to Get Rid of Car Smells for Good — The Complete Odour Elimination Guide

You've tried the pine tree. You've tried the vent clip. You've tried leaving a bag of coffee grounds on the back seat. And yet, the moment you open the car door on a warm day, that smell is still there. The reason is simple: air fresheners mask odours, they don't eliminate them. If the source is still in your car — embedded in the fabric, the carpet, or the ventilation system — the smell will keep coming back until you deal with it properly.

Here's how to actually get rid of car smells for good.

Step 1: Find and Remove the Source

No odour eliminator in the world will work if the source is still present. Before anything else:

  • Vacuum thoroughly — seats, carpet, footwells, boot, and under the seats
  • Check under mats for damp or mould (a very common source of musty smells)
  • Wipe down hard surfaces (dashboard, door cards, centre console) with a damp microfibre cloth
  • Check the boot for old food, wet bags, or anything that's been sitting too long
  • If the smell is from vomit or a food spill, treat the specific area with an upholstery cleaner first and allow to dry fully before the next step

For pet odour, give the interior a proper clean including seats and carpet — urine in particular needs an enzymatic cleaner to break down the proteins before you can neutralise the smell.

Step 2: Ventilate

Open all four doors and the boot for 20–30 minutes before treatment. Run the air conditioning on fresh air mode (not recirculate) for 5–10 minutes to flush the ventilation system. This clears surface-level odour and gives any moisture a chance to escape before you treat.

Step 3: Use the Dakota Odor Bomb

This is the step that does the heavy lifting. The Dakota Odor Bomb releases a fine mist that penetrates fabric, carpet, and the ventilation system — reaching the places a spray or wipe can't. It doesn't just cover the smell; it chemically neutralises odour molecules at the source.

How to use it:

  1. Park the car in a well-ventilated area (outdoors or with garage doors open)
  2. Turn the engine off and close all windows
  3. Set your air conditioning to recirculate mode, fan on medium, engine off — this circulates the mist through the vents once activated
  4. Place the Dakota Odor Bomb canister on the floor of the car (front passenger footwell works well)
  5. Activate the canister and exit the vehicle immediately, closing the door behind you
  6. Leave for 15 minutes — do not re-enter during treatment
  7. After treatment, open all doors and ventilate for a further 10–15 minutes before getting back in

You may notice a strong smell immediately after treatment — this is normal and will dissipate as the car airs out. Within an hour, the interior should smell genuinely neutral rather than masked.

Which Dakota Odor Bomb Should You Choose?

The range comes in a variety of scents, so you can choose based on preference or the severity of the odour problem:

  • Neutral Air — The best choice for serious odour problems (smoke, pet, mildew). Leaves the car smelling genuinely clean rather than scented. Recommended as the first treatment.
  • Vanilla — A warm, subtle scent. Good for maintenance treatments or lighter odour issues.
  • Orange Citrus — Fresh and clean. Works well after a full interior detail.
  • Black Diamond — A premium masculine fragrance. Popular for a fresh, new-feeling interior.
  • New Car Scent — Does exactly what it says. A crowd favourite.

For heavy odours, start with Neutral Air. Once the problem is resolved, use a scented variant for periodic freshening.

Keeping Smells from Coming Back

  • Dry wet items immediately. Wet dogs, muddy boots, and damp gym kit left in a closed car are the fastest route back to a smelly interior. Always air the car after wet passengers.
  • Check under mats regularly. Moisture trapped under rubber mats breeds mould quickly — lift them monthly and allow to dry.
  • Don't eat in the car. Or if you do, clear it out immediately.
  • Run the A/C regularly. Air conditioning systems can harbour bacteria and mould in the evaporator. Running the fan on full with the A/C off for the last few minutes of a journey helps dry it out.
  • Treat with a Dakota Odor Bomb every few months as a preventative measure, especially if you travel regularly with pets.
